Foundation And The Culture Of The Club
It was founded on October 28th 1900 by one engineering university student at the University of Barcelona named Angel Rodriguez. Espanyol was the first club ever to have been formed, and this excited the Spanish fans. In the beginning, the club used to wear bright yellow shirts made from leftovers from the local clothes industry. As time went by, there came on board a sponsor who funded the club. A name change was necessary, so they transformed into Club Deportivo Espanol and immediately changed home kits to blue and white striped for the shirts. The outfit’s colour became the club’s official badge. Espanyol is one football club that has changed its name several times. The first name was Sociedad Espanola de Football. Later on in the year, the club’s name was to changed again to Club Espanol de Futbol. In the year 1906 the club was faced with a serious crisis. It was hard for them to survive and run the regular club’s business due to financial constraints. Due to that reason many players had to leave the club and seek shelter in an alternative club. Most of ex Espanyol players joined the X Sporting Club. After sometime estimated to be about three years or so the club was relaunched once more. This time it was Club Deportivo Espanol, and then in the following year, they adopted the present-day club colour.
Recent Years
Recently the club has witnessed massive success. The club has also managed to move to their new stadium Estadi de Comella El Pray which was officially opened on August 2nd, 2009. The opener match in the new stadium was Espanyol versus Liverpool which they won 3 goals to nil. The club also made significant changes to its administration. The president and the whole board resigned in January 2006 and then the new president Chen Yansheng took over the general management of the club. Since then the club has had its ups and downs but all in all, Espanyol has competed successfully in the European Leagues.
